Description | The Pine Island Park Gate. The roller coaster can be seen in the background still intact. The 135 acres of land for the park were purchased in 1906 through 9 separate purchases by the Traction Company. It entertained guests in the winter and summer months, boasting a dance pavilion, canoe and boating, swimming, fireworks displays, drive-in movies, and in the winter a popular spot for ice skaters. It was easily accessible by trolley car adding to its popularity. The hurricane in 1938 hurt the park, causing damage to the area and attractions at the park. A fire in 1961 destroyed several other attractions. It closed in May of 1963. |
